Question for writers who pair up members of the Batfamily in fanworks:
How do you deal with Alfred? Especially when it’s a mentor/robin relationship or even Dick/Tim which has more of a sibling relationship?
For me personally, the closer the non-familial bonding I get with the story, the farther I have Alfred unless it’s Jason/Tim. For some reason, I think that he’d understand that sort of relationship more than most of the others or at least, he’d be able to ignore it easier.
But yeah, the Alfred issue: how do you guys tackle it?

I think Alfred would be more concerned about the “once tried to kill you” aspect of JayTim then the “adopted by the same man, but never lived in the same house at the same time (or actually met until after Jay died and came back to life)” aspect.
I mean, it’s not biologically incest obviously and I wouldn’t call it emotional incest, so I think that part would be a non-issue.
Depending on how the relationship progressed in the story I think Alfred would have serious reservations about that relationship. Maybe if he witnessed them slowly coming to care for each other (if they all live at home), but otherwise I think he’d worry, but not really say anything outside of telling them both to be careful with each other - subtly and obliquely.
I think Alfred would not be pleased if Bruce took up with one of his kids. I think the kid in question would have to actually talk to Alfred about it.
I actually think Dick/Damian would be less of an issue. But that’s because I think it would take older!Damian (can’t see it working with young!Damian) a lot of time and effort to convince Dick. And Alfred would witness a lot of that and as a result be like “not socially acceptable, but also not the worst thing he’s done… and good grief I wouldn’t even know where to start…”
Dick/Tim would depend on whether Tim, in that story, Tim has been pinning for Dick in secret or if he did have brotherly feelings for a while. The first, well, Alfred probably knew that already (and was secretly rooting for Tim), so he’d be glad that Tim’s finally getting his wish. The second would probably play out like the Bruce/kid scenario.
But yeah, all of that may be pretty dependent on my own headcanon, so take it with a grain of salt.
I am firmly convinced that Victoria’s Secret has magical properties.

Dick Grayson is a beautiful human being. He lets these people cling to him for as long as they need. What a kind an loving person. Nightwing doesn’t need superpowers because he is so possessed of compassion and a genuine love for humanity. Dick isn’t beautiful just because he looks nice in his costume. He’s pretty, sure, that’s nice. He’s beautiful for his courage, his capacity for forgiveness and acceptance. He’s my hero.

Let’s all just take a moment and appreciate the fact that this man was raised. By. Batman. BY BATMAN. By Bruce Wayne, who although a wonderful hero in many ways, is kind of terrible when it comes to things like friendliness and emotional expressiveness.
But Dick is not like that at ALL. Dick LOVES people. Dick goes out and he saves people, and he uses the skills that Bruce taught him, and in some ways it looks like he’s just doing the same thing that Bruce does, but THIS is why I will never understand the people who say that Dick is just “Batman Lite”. Because if that’s what you think, then you’re not getting it. You’re not getting it at ALL. Nightwing may be a non-powered normal who saves the day mainly through his intelligence and training, like Batman, but those things aren’t what define the type of hero that he is. What defines the type of hero that he is is his warmth. His love of humanity. His deep empathy for other people.
THAT is why I’m such a huge fan of Dick’s. It’s not because I think he’s super cute. It’s not because he can do awesome acrobatics. It’s because he has one of the biggest hearts in the DCU. Because he is the kind of hero who would let two complete strangers hug him for half an hour after he rescues them. Just because they need it, and he’s there to protect them, not just physically but also emotionally. Because “in the end, that’s all that counts”.
If that’s not heroism, I don’t know what is.
